The Exhibition Value of ART021 SHANGHAI

  • One of the Most Influential Contemporary and Modern Art Fairs in China and Across Asia: Founded in 2013 as a featured program of the Shanghai International Arts Festival, ART021 SHANGHAI is also one of the core initiators of Shanghai International Art Fair Week. Over more than a decade of development, the fair has become a leading indicator and annual highlight of China’s contemporary art market, forming, alongside events such as Art Basel Hong Kong, a cornerstone of the Asian art landscape.
  • A Professional Showcase Platform Covering the Entire Industry Chain: The fair features five distinct exhibition zones—Main Gallery, APPROACH, DETOUR, BEYOND, and Special Projects—presenting works across diverse media, including contemporary painting, sculpture, installation, photography, digital art, video, and museum-quality art jewelry. From iconic masterpieces by internationally established galleries to experimental projects by emerging artists, and from traditional artistic forms to cross-disciplinary collaborations, exhibitors can achieve comprehensive exposure, connect with collectors, and engage in scholarly dialogue.
  • Precise Access to Asia’s Core Collectors and Institutional Decision-Makers: With a mission to support Chinese contemporary art and cultivate an elite local collector base, ART021 has established itself as a professional yet open platform for art trading. Each year, the fair draws top-tier collectors, museum directors, curators, patrons, and art enthusiasts from around the globe to Shanghai. A senior partner at David Zwirner previously noted that ART021 serves as a vital hub for engaging with Chinese clients and connecting with a new generation of collectors, while last year’s edition delivered one of the gallery’s strongest sales performances to date.
  • Unique Value for Participating Galleries: Strategic Entry Point into the Chinese Market: As China’s contemporary art market continues to expand, Shanghai is accelerating efforts to build a multi‑billion‑dollar art‑trading ecosystem. ART021 stands as the preferred gateway for international galleries seeking to enter China, while providing domestic galleries with a critical node to showcase their key collections and access global resources. At the 13th edition in 2025, over 70% of participating galleries were from China, with 34 distinguished international and regional galleries making their debut—including renowned names such as Lisson Gallery, Greene Naftali, and NANZUKA. Additionally, eight galleries from Indonesia’s YGO organization participated for the first time, further broadening the fair’s Southeast Asian artistic footprint.
  • A Vanguard for Technological Innovation and Industry Trends: Museum-quality art jewelry, conceptual art, cross-media practices, and digital art have emerged as key highlights. At the 2025 edition, David Zwirner presented Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s iconic blue curtain work, valued at millions of dollars, sparking profound reflections on the very nature of art through conceptual inquiry. Brands like CINDY CHAO and Fengji Jewelry continued to unveil new masterpieces, exemplifying the seamless fusion of art and craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the forum sessions focused on pivotal themes such as art collecting, reimagining aesthetic classics, and cross-cultural curatorial practices.
  • In-Depth Connections Between High‑End Forums and Industry Resources: Concurrent with the fair, the ART021 Forum brought together artists, curators, and seasoned industry professionals to discuss pressing issues ranging from market dynamics and cross-sector collaborations to the contemporary practices of young artists. During the event, high-profile partnerships between brands such as Dior, Porsche, Glenfiddich, and JNBY, and various artists were showcased, exploring possibilities for cross‑disciplinary synergies among art, fashion, automotive, and whisky industries.
  • Shanghai’s Geographical and Policy Advantages: As the epicenter of China’s—and indeed Asia’s—art market, Shanghai boasts the nation’s most vibrant artistic ecosystem and the most sophisticated art‑trading infrastructure. The fair’s main venue, the Shanghai Exhibition Center, is centrally located in Jing’an District, and its programming aligns seamlessly with the “Art on the Suzhou River” 2025 season. A specially designed “ARTYWALK route” links key cultural institutions in Jing’an, facilitating the efficient conversion of artistic energy into consumer demand. As a flagship initiative of Shanghai International Art Fair Week, ART021 provides exhibitors with a strategic platform to engage with both the Chinese and broader Asian art markets.
