Exhibition Review

The 23rd interpack, the leading international trade fair for packaging and processing technologies, was successfully held at Messe Düsseldorf from May 4 to 10, 2023. With the theme “Welcome Home,” this edition marked the first large-scale in-person global gathering of the packaging industry in six years. The event attracted 2,809 exhibitors from 61 countries, occupying a total exhibition space spanning more than 18 halls, and drew approximately 142,060 professional visitors from 156 nations—two-thirds of whom were international attendees, with key source markets including India, Japan, and the United States.

Four Key Themes Driving Industry Innovation

The fair focused on four major themes—“Circular Economy,” “Resource Management,” “Digital Technologies,” and “Product Safety”—highlighting innovative solutions addressing global challenges. In the realm of sustainable packaging, over 1,000 packaging material exhibitors set a new record, showcasing an array of cutting-edge offerings such as bio-based plastics, single-material recyclable films, and applications of recycled content. Digital technologies also emerged as a standout highlight, with the Fraunhofer Institute presenting VR‑based digital training systems, while Holy Grail 2.0 digital watermarking, RFID, NFC, and augmented reality applications garnered significant attention.

A Strong International Presence and Record-Breaking Packaging Materials Sector

Exhibitors hailed from all five continents, with Germany, Italy, China, Turkey, India, the Netherlands, the United States, France, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom among the most represented countries. Key participants included IMA, Coesia Group, Syntegon Technology, Marchesini Group, Sollich, Duravant, Aasted, Modivik, OPTIMA Packaging Group, and Ishida Europe. For the first time, the packaging materials sector exceeded 1,000 exhibitors, forming a dedicated “show within a show” that showcased innovations in paper and cardboard, bioplastics, recyclable films, and single-material solutions.

Chinese Exhibitors Make a Strong Impression; Digital Flexible Packaging Takes Center Stage

Chinese companies demonstrated robust participation, with Yutong Technology unveiling high‑quality packaging solutions across consumer electronics, cosmetics, food, and tobacco sectors, alongside eco‑friendly options such as all‑plant‑fiber laptop packaging and fluorine‑free catering packaging. NetScreen and Fujifilm stood out as star exhibitors in the digital flexible packaging segment, with NetScreen’s Truepress Pac 830F water‑based inkjet digital printer and Fujifilm’s FP790 digital soft‑packaging printer—alongside their ecosystems developed in collaboration with Miaohua Software, Henkel, and Nordmeccanica—drawing considerable interest. Coding and marking giants such as Domino, Markem‑Imaje, and Videojet also showcased traceability‑oriented solutions.

High‑Quality Visitors and Exceptional Satisfaction

Approximately 75% of attendees held mid‑to‑senior management positions or possessed investment decision‑making authority, and 96% reported achieving their exhibition objectives. Concurrent events—including the Spotlight Talks & Trends forum, the interpack Start-up Zone, the Co‑Packing joint pavilion, the SAVE FOOD special route, and the Women in Packaging networking initiative—engaged over 200,000 viewers through live broadcast coverage. Meanwhile, the components special exhibition brought together around 80 upstream suppliers, focusing on the components and software solutions essential for digital manufacturing.

Positive Feedback from Exhibitors

IMA Group showcased 46 machines across nearly 5,000 square meters, including 12 new models; Theegarten‑Pactec’s managing partner remarked, “The quality of the audience was exceptionally high”; Metsä Board expressed delight at the arrival of high‑caliber international visitors; and Markem‑Imaje underscored the fair’s strong international character and the positive reception of its new hall concept. The next edition is scheduled to take place in Düsseldorf from May 7 to 13, 2026.
