Tokyo Museum of Modern Art
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (established in 1994) traces the development of modern art. The museum defines modern art as “the latest creative activities that follow international trends, including art from 1945 onwards,” and focuses on collecting domestic works. The collection includes pioneering Japanese avant-garde artworks as well as overseas works that capture the essence of modern art from an international perspective. From this collection, over a hundred works by artists such as Andy Warhol and Tadanori Yokoo have been selected for permanent exhibition, vividly illustrating the progression of modern art. Additionally, the museum hosts large-scale international exhibitions and various other distinctive thematic exhibitions.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum is part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Public Museums, funded by public tax revenue, and opened its doors in 1994. It is the only museum in Tokyo dedicated to comprehensively introducing both foreign and domestic contemporary art; it is also the largest museum in Japan. Spanning three floors above ground and three below, with a total area of 33,500 square meters, the construction cost amounted to 41.5 billion yen.
