David L. Lawrence Convention Center
David L. Lawrence Convention Center
The David L. Lawrence Convention Center in the United States spans 290,880 square feet and is located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is above two exits of Interstate 579. The original David L. Lawrence Convention Center was completed on February 7, 1981, but as part of an updated plan, this entirely redesigned center opened in 2003 and was jointly funded with nearby Heinz Field and PNC Park. It is situated on the South Shore of the Allegheny River.
After the Commonwealth approved funding for the redesign of the center on February 3, 1999, Rafael Viñoly Architects P.C. were selected as the designers for the modern center on February 28, 1999. Viñoly, together with Dewhurst MacFarlane & Partners and Goldreich Engineering P.C., constructed the riverside landmark at a cost of $354 million (today approximately $520 million), featuring a 316,100-square-foot (29,400 m²) ballroom, 51 meeting rooms, two auditoriums seating 250 each, facilities for teleconferencing and telecommunications, and 4,500 square feet (420 m²) of retail space (currently under development).
