Established in 1995 by a decree of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Bulgaria, the HEMUS International Defense Exhibition has adopted the theme "Defense, Anti-Terrorism, and Security" since 2001, which remains its core focus to this day.

Held biennially in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the HEMUS International Trade Exhibition for Defense Equipment, Anti-Terrorism, and Security featured 157 exhibitors and VIP delegations from 50 countries at its last edition, with prominent national pavilions from the United States, France, Germany, Israel, and South Korea.

As a member of NATO and the EU, Bulgaria will join the Schengen Area in 2025. Sino-Bulgarian trade has grown rapidly, reaching $4.22 billion in 2023, making China Bulgaria's third-largest trading partner outside the EU and its second-largest export destination. Bulgaria serves as a strategic node for the Belt and Road Initiative in the Balkans. Plovdiv, the country's second-largest city, is a major industrial, commercial, scientific, cultural, and transportation hub in the region, with the international railway corridor from Belgrade to Istanbul passing through it.
