Profile
The Tokyo International Winter Comic Convention (Comic Market) is the world’s largest self-published fan‑made comic convention; within the anime community, it is commonly referred to by the letter “C” followed by its edition number. Since 1996, it has been held twice annually—during winter and summer—in Tokyo. Its core activities include the sale and exhibition of doujinshi and related derivative works, alongside corporate pavilions and a dedicated cosplay zone. The event draws three main participant groups—creators, readers, and general attendees—thus driving the development of Japan’s doujin culture.
The convention originated from a doujinshi market initiated by Yoshihiro Yonezawa. Its inaugural event took place in December 1975 at a meeting room of the Japanese Firefighters’ Association, attracting 32 participating circles. In 1981, it relocated to the Harumi International Trade Center, and in 1996, it moved to the Tokyo Big Sight, where corporate exhibitors were introduced.
The Tokyo International Winter Comic Convention (Comic Market) primarily showcases self‑published books related to anime, manga, games, novels, and other media—this being its principal operational format. It stands as the world’s largest anime‑related doujinshi fair, drawing creators and fans from every corner of the globe.
Today, anime culture has evolved far beyond mere niche interests. Beyond global events, numerous local conventions are now commonplace, with themes ranging from anime and gaming to doujinshi creations—a veritable panorama of diverse expressions. As the birthplace of otaku culture, Japan approaches the organization of such events with exceptional seriousness. While many conventions exist worldwide, none matches Comic Market in terms of annual scale or attendance.
Although Comic Market focuses on doujinshi centered around manga and anime, it also welcomes railway enthusiasts, lolita fashion designers, amateur singers and dancers (known as “utae” and “maita”), and even independent artists who sell their work there. Today, Comic Market is no longer confined to anime—it serves as a vibrant hub for virtually all aspects of two-dimensional culture.
Several reputable companies have participated in past editions! The Tokyo International Winter Comic Convention (Comic Market) truly lives up to its nickname of “holy war,” which is no exaggeration. Some fans describe attending Comic Market as akin to making a pilgrimage: along the way, one feels that every location is sacred—but upon arrival, they discover that the real sanctity lies in the very act of gathering and celebrating.
