Art Basel Hong KongProfile

Art Basel Hong Kong has been steadfastly committed since its inception in 1970 to fostering connections between the world’s leading galleries and their patrons, while also serving as a vital platform for international artistic exchange. As one of Art Basel’s three global venues, the Hong Kong edition is Asia’s largest and most influential international art fair. It brings together top-tier galleries, collectors, curators, and museum directors, making it a strategic hub for galleries seeking to build an international reputation and enter the Asian market.

The exhibition is organized into six distinct sections—“Art Spaces,” “Galleries,” “Asian Perspectives,” “New Horizons,” “Lighting the Scene,” and “Curatorial Corner”—presenting diverse artistic visions, historical narratives, and forward‑looking works by established and emerging artists, thereby offering visitors a fresh and immersive art experience.

Art Basel Hong Kong features 243 leading galleries from 40 countries and regions. Among them, galleries hailing from Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa showcase exceptional quality across all artistic disciplines.

Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel, emphasized his unwavering commitment to further elevating and strengthening the Basel platform, ensuring that the fair continues to engage both seasoned and emerging audiences and artists in meaningful ways. He described this as an exciting journey brimming with potential, expressing great enthusiasm for guiding the organization toward innovative approaches that positively impact the communities it serves and reimagine Art Basel’s role within the global art landscape.

Hong Kong has emerged as the region in Asia with the highest concentration of international galleries, cementing Central as a renowned cultural landmark. As one of the world’s largest cultural projects, Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District encompasses three major cultural institutions—the M+ Museum, the Hong Kong Palace Museum, and the Xiqu Centre—transforming Victoria Harbour into an “Art Bay.”

With five compelling exhibition zones, alongside initiatives such as “Conversations with Art Basel” and “Lighting the Scene,” as well as collaborations with local arts organizations, Art Basel Hong Kong delivers an exceptionally diverse and vibrant artistic voice.

It is worth noting that Art Basel also partners closely with galleries, artists, world‑class institutions, and cultural collaborators.During the fair, Art Basel Hong Kong will launch a series of dynamic arts and cultural events and programs throughout the city.

  • A Premier Platform in the Global Art Market: As one of Art Basel’s three global venues, the Hong Kong show is Asia’s largest and most influential international art event. It brings together world‑class galleries, collectors, curators, and museum directors, serving as a strategic gateway for galleries to build their international reputation and enter the Asian market.
  • A Central Hub Linking Eastern and Western Art Ecosystems: Situated at the heart of Asia’s art market, Hong Kong balances an international outlook with a distinctly Asian cultural context. The fair functions both as a foothold for leading Western galleries entering Asia and as a springboard for Asian and emerging galleries expanding globally, fostering cross‑regional artistic dialogue and commercial partnerships.
  • A Gathering of High‑End Collectors with Exceptional Sales Performance: Art Basel attracts top-tier private collectors, family offices, corporate collection advisors, and museum acquisition committees from around the globe, maintaining consistently high sales conversion rates. From masterworks to cutting‑edge contemporary pieces, artworks achieve swift transactions during the fair, delivering steady commercial returns for participating galleries.
  • A Barometer of Global Art Market Trends: The fair provides a clear snapshot of evolving trends across creative mediums, artistic movements, and collecting preferences, offering authoritative guidance for galleries to refine their artist representation strategies and shape exhibition programming. Exhibition Review

The 2025 Art Basel Hong Kong took place from March 28 to 30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, under the theme “Repositioning.” The fair attracted 240 galleries from 42 countries and regions, including 23 making their debut, and drew a total of 91,000 visitors. The event showcased five key highlights and emerging trends:

A Gathering of International Blue-Chip Galleries: World‑renowned institutions such as Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, Pace Gallery, Gagosian, and White Cube presented works by leading contemporary and modern artists. Hauser & Wirth exhibited Louise Bourgeois’s installation “Cage (Choisy No. 2)”; David Zwirner focused on figurative painters like Luc Tuymans; Pace Gallery featured sculptures by Alighiero Boetti alongside works by Chinese artists including Zhang Xiaogang and Song Dong; while White Cube highlighted creations by Ida Applebroog, Liu Ye, Zhou Li, and others.

An Amplified Presence of Asian and Emerging Forces: Galleries from Southeast Asia and Africa saw a marked increase in prominence, with South African firms like blank projects and LambdaLambdaLambda participating for the first time. Philippine galleries Silverlens and The Drawing Room stood out, with Pasida Abad’s large-scale work acquired by a Southeast Asian museum for US$500,000. Meanwhile, Chinese galleries—including Beijing Commune, ShanghART, and Hive Center for Contemporary Art—presented works by artists such as Wang Guangle, Ding Yi, and Han Mengyun.

Spectacular Large-Scale Installations: Under the theme “As the World Turns,” the “Art Space” section featured 18 monumental installations. These included He Enhuai’s series of 30 brass sculptures, Lu Yang’s virtual avatar piece “Only One, Only Death—The Creator,” and Wang Yefeng’s “Desert Garden,” all exploring the intersection of digital and physical realms. Tintin Wulia’s large-scale installation “Five Tons of Home and Other Subterranean Narratives” used cardboard packaging to pay tribute to Hong Kong’s grassroots laborers.

Masters and Rising Stars Share the Spotlight: Masterworks by Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Fontana, Picasso, Francis Bacon, and others anchored the exhibition. The “Artistic Exploration” zone showcased 22 galleries presenting solo projects by emerging artists, characterized by avant-garde concepts and diverse media. Fluorescent hues and pop‑style abstracts were noticeably less prevalent, with works emphasizing critical inquiry and humanistic concerns taking center stage.

Robust Market Performance: Sales were brisk on the VIP preview day, with Taiwanese collectors purchasing works ranging from US$300,000 to US$320,000, and Shanghai collectors placing orders totaling RMB 850,000 within 15 minutes for pieces by Italian artists. Exhibiting galleries reported sales far surpassing previous years, with some achieving sell‑through rates exceeding 80%.
