Essilor’s XtraVue Control released results from a six‑year clinical trial demonstrating that continuous wear of its advanced aspheric lenses delayed myopia progression by an average of 1.95 diopters and slowed axial elongation by an average of 0.81 millimeters compared to single‑vision lenses.
  • A rich array of concurrent events creates a premier platform for industry dialogue. During the expo, numerous academic forums, new‑product launch events, and technical exchange sessions are held, focusing on pressing topics such as myopia control, AI applications in ophthalmology, and cutting‑edge developments in eye‑care technology. Professor Li Shiming from Beijing Tongren Hospital, affiliated with Capital Medical University, urged greater attention to the utilization of hyperopic reserve, advocating tiered management based on individual hyperopic reserve reference values to achieve more precise and effective myopia management. Meanwhile, Professor He XianGui from the Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center emphasized the critical importance of early intervention to slow the progression of myopia and prevent its occurrence among high‑risk populations, underscoring the significance of comprehensive myopia prevention strategies.
  • For Chinese enterprises, this expo serves as a strategic gateway for expanding into the domestic market, connecting with global resources, and showcasing innovative capabilities. With an overall childhood and adolescent myopia prevalence rate of 51.9% in China—36.7% among primary school students, 71.4% among junior high school students, and 81.2% among senior high school students—myopia control has become a national priority. The expo gathers traditional lens giants such as Zeiss Optics, Essilor, and Mingyue Lenses, renowned pharmaceutical companies like Xingqi Eye Medicine and Hailu, as well as smart‑technology innovators like Eagle Eye Technology, Nidec, and BOE Health, collectively sharing personalized solutions tailored to different age groups and application scenarios. Exhibiting companies can leverage this platform to connect with domestic medical and optometric distribution channels, seizing the opportunity to lead the transformation of the eye‑care industry toward intelligence, precision, and consumer‑oriented innovation.

Review

The 25th Shanghai International Ophthalmology and Optometry Technology & Equipment Exhibition (COOC 2025) was successfully held from April 10 to 12, 2025, at the Shanghai International Convention and Exhibition Center. Hosted by authoritative organizations including the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Research Hospital Association, this edition of the exhibition is a premier annual event in the fields of ophthalmology and visual sciences across the Asia-Pacific region.

In terms of scale, the event brought together ophthalmological experts and scholars from around the world, emerging young talents, and leading industry players, showcasing cutting-edge clinical advances in ophthalmology and visual sciences through keynote speeches, high-level forums, and other formats. The exhibition featured carefully curated thematic sections and activities, with the optometry zone continuously expanding to encompass areas such as refractive/ophthalmic diagnostic equipment, vision training devices and systems, AI‑powered diagnostics, orthokeratology lenses, eye care products, optometry chain institutions, and optometry training programs.

This year’s exhibition boasted numerous highlights, with myopia prevention and control emerging as the central theme. Essilor’s Stellest smart myopia‑control lens unveiled the results of a six‑year clinical trial demonstrating that, compared with single‑vision lenses, continuous wear over six years slowed myopia progression by an average of 1.95 diopters and reduced axial elongation by an average of 0.81 millimeters, providing robust scientific evidence for managing myopia in children and adolescents. Additionally, Essilor’s Stellest plano lenses incorporating advanced aspheric micro‑lens technology have also been supported by data showing that, for children with low hyperopic reserve who wear the lenses for more than 30 hours per week, axial elongation can be effectively delayed. Professor Chen Zhi and his team from the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital affiliated with Fudan University presented their latest clinical research based on these advanced aspheric micro‑lens technologies.

AI‑powered ophthalmic devices made a striking debut, becoming one of the exhibition’s major attractions. EyePoint Technologies showcased its next‑generation star product, the AFC‑100 (2.0), a fully automated non‑mydriatic fundus camera specifically designed for AI‑driven retinal image analysis. Featuring a jaw‑free tilting design and advanced 2/3‑inch sensor imaging technology, it offers a non‑invasive, highly efficient screening solution ideally suited for myopia prevention among youth, diabetic retinopathy monitoring, and other chronic eye disease screenings. Meanwhile, Nidec, a pioneer in remote‑vision myopia‑control technology, presented its full range of myopia‑management solutions based on freeform optical technology. These products can project a high‑resolution image measuring 151 inches at a distance of six meters via a desktop device, effectively transforming near‑vision into far‑vision and addressing the root causes of myopia development, drawing significant interest and hands‑on engagement from medical professionals on site.

A rich array of concurrent events created a high‑end platform for industry exchange. Professor Li Shiming from Beijing Tongren Hospital, affiliated with Capital Medical University, called for greater attention to the application of hyperopic reserve management, advocating tiered approaches based on individual hyperopic reserve reference values to achieve more precise and effective myopia control. Professor He XianGui from the Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center emphasized the importance of early intervention to slow the progression of myopia and prevent its onset in high‑risk populations, noting that such measures are crucial for enhancing overall myopia prevention and control efforts and advancing blindness prevention to earlier stages. Director Xu Xun of the National Clinical Research Center for Eye Diseases pointed out that 0.01% atropine sulfate eye drops are prescription medications primarily used to slow myopia progression in children but cannot reverse or cure myopia; therefore, they must be administered under the close supervision of qualified physicians according to prescribed regimens.

The professional audience was exceptionally strong, with buyers of high caliber. The exhibition attracted ophthalmologists, optometrists, procurement managers from medical institutions, distributors, and industry experts from across China. Officials at the venue expressed hope that each participating company would gain meaningful voice and influence, bringing together more industry pioneers to expand the market pie and provide a vital platform for dialogue, trade expansion, and collaborative opportunities.

The exhibition yielded impressive outcomes and received enthusiastic industry feedback. Exhibiting companies generally reported that this year’s event attracted a high‑quality professional audience with clear purchasing intentions and a vibrant atmosphere of on‑site collaboration. Attendees agreed that COOC not only serves as an excellent platform for brand exposure and business matchmaking but also functions as a critical hub for gaining insights into trends within the ophthalmology and optometry sectors and exploring pathways for AI‑enabled transformation in ophthalmology and myopia prevention.

The 26th Shanghai International Ophthalmology and Optometry Technology & Equipment Exhibition (COOC 2026) is scheduled to take place in April 2026 at the Shanghai International Convention and Exhibition Center. The exhibition will continue to provide an efficient platform for global communication and cooperation within the ophthalmology and optometry industries.
