The Value of Participating in the American Gaming and Tabletop Game Expo

  • The American Gaming and Tabletop Game Expo (Gen Con) is the largest and longest-running tabletop gaming event globally, having been held since 1968. With over fifty editions under its belt, it is widely regarded as the “Olympics” of the tabletop gaming industry and the ultimate pilgrimage site for global gaming culture. Organized by Gen Con LLC, the expo takes place annually in August at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. In 2025, it set a new record with nearly 72,000 attendees, attracting more than 575 exhibiting companies and generating an estimated economic impact exceeding $82 million for the local economy, thereby underscoring its unique position as a central hub for the global tabletop gaming industry.
  • The core value of participation lies in its unparalleled industry influence and its role as a precise platform connecting global game buyers. As North America’s oldest gaming expo, Gen Con serves not only as a flagship stage for new product launches but also as a strategic gateway linking core player communities with key decision-makers across the supply chain. The 2025 edition drew nearly 72,000 attendees, including a significant contingent of hardcore gamers, collectors, and retailers, enabling exhibitors to directly engage with highly active, purchase‑driven consumer segments. With nearly 30,000 events held throughout the show—ranging from tournaments and seminars to new‑product demos and immersive role‑playing experiences—the expo offers brands deep opportunities to reach their target audiences.
  • The expo establishes a one‑stop commercial platform covering the entire gaming value chain. Exhibits span all categories, including board games, card games, role‑playing games, video games, gaming accessories, toy models, anime merchandise, software, and development tools. In 2025, the show brought together 575 globally renowned game publishers, developers, and accessory manufacturers, among them industry leaders such as Ravensburger (Disney Lorcana), Paizo (Pathfinder series), Dire Wolf Digital (Clank! series), Asmodee, Leder Games, and Restoration Games. Exhibitors commonly report that Gen Con represents their most important annual sales milestone, with many new releases and limited‑edition products selling out immediately during the event.
  • The expo aligns with three major industry trends—product experience, community engagement, and launch‑driven economics—creating a showcase for innovative products and vibrant gaming cultures. During the 2025 edition, Ravensburger unveiled the tie‑in game for “Horrified: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS” alongside new Disney villain‑themed products, capturing widespread attention. Although Leder Games did not introduce entirely new IPs, its previous works remained immensely popular at the booth; Restoration Games announced a short‑campaign expansion for their classic title “Thunder Road,” which was enthusiastically embraced by players. Dire Wolf Digital’s exclusive debut of the “Clank! Catacombs Underworld” expansion during the expo drew long queues of eager participants. Additionally, the expo’s Artist Zone, Writers’ Avenue, cosplay competitions, and the large‑scale “Real Dungeon” experience further reinforced its reputation as a premier cultural gathering for gaming enthusiasts.
  • For Chinese enterprises, this expo serves as a strategic gateway to penetrate the North American market, connect with global resources, and demonstrate innovative capabilities. With the North American tabletop gaming market steadily expanding, Gen Con—being the world’s largest concentration of gaming consumers—acts as a crucial litmus test for assessing product market acceptance. It is worth noting that, due to U.S. tariff policies and international logistics challenges in 2025, some exhibitors faced rising costs and shipment delays; however, this did not diminish their enthusiasm for participation, instead highlighting Gen Con’s irreplaceable status as a central industry platform. Through this platform, exhibitors can access core North American procurement networks and seize early opportunities in the ongoing transformation of the gaming industry toward creativity, premium quality, and globalization.

Review

The 57th edition of the Gen Con 2025, the premier American gaming and tabletop game expo, was successfully held from July 31 to August 3, 2025, at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, USA. Hosted by Gen Con LLC, this event is the annual highlight of North America’s tabletop gaming industry and a global celebration for gaming enthusiasts worldwide.

In terms of scale, this year’s show set new records: nearly 72,000 attendees filled the venue (sold out for the second consecutive year), with over 575 exhibiting companies—up significantly from 540 in 2024. During the event, nearly 30,000 activities were organized, generating an economic impact exceeding $82 million for the Indianapolis region. The exhibition upheld its core philosophy of “The Best Four Days in Gaming™,” with the entire convention center and stadium brimming with exhibitors and visitors from around the globe, showcasing everything from board games and card games to role-playing games and video games.

This year’s event featured numerous highlights, with major international game publishers unveiling groundbreaking new releases that became the centerpiece of the show. Ravensburger introduced the tie-in game for “Horrified: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS” along with new products inspired by Disney villains; Restoration Games announced a short-campaign expansion for their classic title “Thunder Road”; and Dire Wolf Digital debuted an exclusive new expansion for “Clank! Catacombs Underworld” during the event. Meanwhile, the Sorcery: Contested Realm team proudly unveiled the “Dragonlord” expansion, featuring hand-drawn artwork by Ed Beard Jr., while also hosting the inaugural Crossroads Championship, where 128 players fiercely competed, ultimately crowned by Nate “Duo” Smith using a Hot Springs Druid deck. Heroscape staged its first-ever World Championship, attracting more than 100 participants, with Nick Elder claiming the inaugural title; additional world championships were held for Axis vs. Allies, Diplomacy, Acquire, Robo Rally, and other popular titles.

Specialized zones and startup incubation programs emerged as key attractions of the show. This year marked the 16th anniversary of Entrepreneurs Avenue, providing emerging game developers with their debut platform. Six companies—including Mozaic Games (India), Salt and Pepper Games, MOCO Games, Roll & Play Press, This Way, and Avantris Entertainment—received marketing scholarships, securing larger booth spaces and additional promotional support. The event also featured an Artists’ Zone, Writers’ Avenue, a cosplay competition, and outdoor street parties on South Street, with local culinary partners such as Sun King Brewery, HotBox Pizza, and Daniel's Vineyard contributing to an immersive gaming culture experience.

Parallel events and charitable initiatives continued to gain momentum. During the expo, attendees raised nearly $40,000 for Women4Change Indiana and the Brown Toy Box Foundation. Since 2003, Gen Con has collectively raised close to $500,000 for various charities. The event also hosted the first-ever Heroscape Bounty Event, where players challenged Renegade staff members to win exclusive reward cards; interactive areas like the Heroscape Paint Station and Cosplay Activity Zone further enriched the immersive experience for participants.

A strong professional audience and unprecedented international participation defined this year’s show. The event drew game designers, publishers, retailers, hardcore gamers, collectors, and families from across the globe. Notably, the 2025 edition faced challenges posed by tariff policies, leading some exhibitors—such as The Op—to cancel their booths, while Portal Games encountered shipping delays that prevented them from delivering their new release, “Age of Galaxy.” Flat River Group significantly scaled back its North American distribution operations. Despite these hurdles, many major publishers reported record-breaking sales, and mid-sized companies generally described their results as “strong,” “steady,” or “better than expected.”

The 58th Gen Con will take place from July 30 to August 2, 2026, at the Indiana Convention Center, with contracts already secured through 2030. Attendance is projected to surpass 80,000, and the event will continue to serve as a vital platform for efficient communication and collaboration within the global tabletop gaming industry.
