The Exhibition Value of the Malaysia Tourism Fair
- The Malaysia Tourism Association (MATTA) Fair is Malaysia’s largest and most influential consumer‑oriented tourism exhibition. Since its inception, it has been successfully held for more than fifty editions and has been officially recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as “Malaysia’s largest consumer‑focused tourism fair,” making it the premier tourism industry event in Southeast Asia. Held twice annually in Kuala Lumpur and developed through close collaboration with authoritative organizations such as the Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (MITA), the fair has become a pivotal platform connecting global tourism suppliers with Southeast Asian consumers.
- The core value of participation lies in its unique positioning as a precision‑driven platform that links Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian consumer market, coupled with its robust ability to reach end‑consumers. Each year, the fair attracts hundreds of exhibitors from around the world, spanning the entire tourism value chain—including travel agencies, airlines, hotel groups, cruise lines, and national tourism boards. The autumn 2025 edition set a record with 2,049 booths and 334 exhibiting companies, drawing over 200,000 professional visitors and generating on‑site sales totaling several hundred million ringgit. As the preferred platform for Malaysian consumers to plan their annual travel itineraries and procure travel products, the fair provides participating enterprises with a strategic gateway to engage directly with Southeast Asia’s key consumer segments.
- The fair has established a one‑stop consumer platform covering the entire tourism value chain. Exhibits encompass all categories, including outbound and domestic travel, air tickets, hotel accommodations, cruise vacations, travel insurance, and tourism technology. The exhibitor lineup features leading local institutions such as Malaysia Airlines Group, the Malaysia Tourism Board, the Sabah Tourism Board, Penang Global Tours, and Genting World, alongside national tourism boards and airlines from various countries. For the first time in 2025, the fair introduced a pickleball sports experience zone, leveraging this emerging form of sports tourism to expand into younger consumer demographics.
- The fair aligns with three major industry trends—sustainable development, digital marketing, and sports tourism—establishing itself as a showcase for innovative products and cutting‑edge concepts. In 2025, the fair launched the MATTA Eco‑Sustainable Tourism Initiative (MESTI) pavilion, co‑developed by partners including RHB Bank, the Sabah Tourism Board, and Penang Global Tours, focusing on three core pillars: wildlife conservation, marine protection, and cultural heritage preservation. In collaboration with an independent auditing firm, the fair conducted a comprehensive assessment of its carbon footprint, promoting the implementation of sustainable tourism practices. Concurrently, interactive activities such as buyer competitions, cycling‑related short‑video challenges, and lucky wheel draws were organized, significantly enhancing visitor engagement.
- For Chinese enterprises, this fair serves as a strategic gateway to tap into the Southeast Asian market and connect with Malaysia’s outbound tourism resources. Malaysia is a key outbound tourism market within ASEAN, with a significant Chinese‑ethnic population and strong receptivity toward Chinese tourism offerings. As a critical strategic partner for “Malaysia Tourism Year 2026,” Chinese tourism organizations can leverage the fair to engage Malaysian and Southeast Asian consumers, promoting China’s tourist destinations and products. Participating companies can use this platform to access Southeast Asia’s core consumer base, securing a competitive edge in advancing Chinese tourism offerings within the Malaysian market.

Exhibition Review
The 2025 MATTA Fair set new records in both its spring and autumn editions: the April spring show was successfully held from the 18th to the 20th at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur, while the September autumn show took place concurrently from the 5th to the 7th. Both events were organized by the Malaysian Association of Tour Operators (MATTA) and represent the annual highlight of Malaysia’s tourism industry.
In terms of scale, the spring show broke records with 1,754 booths across eight exhibition halls spanning three levels, attracting over 210,000 visitors and generating on-site sales of RM 270 million—marking a significant increase compared to the previous edition. The autumn show surpassed even these achievements, featuring a total of 2,049 booths and 334 exhibiting companies, and was once again recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as “Malaysia’s largest consumer‑oriented travel fair.” The exhibitor lineup included leading organizations such as Malaysia Airlines Group, Sabah Tourism Board, Penang Global Tourism, and Genting World, alongside official tourism boards from Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, China (Macao), and other countries and regions.
This year’s fair showcased a wealth of highlights, with sustainable development serving as the central theme throughout. The event introduced the MATTA Eco‑Sustainable Tourism Initiative (MESTI) pavilion, co‑developed by partners including RHB Bank, Sabah Tourism Board, and Penang Global Tourism, focusing on three core pillars: wildlife conservation, marine preservation, and cultural heritage stewardship. In collaboration with an independent auditing firm, the fair conducted a comprehensive carbon‑footprint assessment over the three days, pioneering the first-ever carbon‑footprint accounting for a large‑scale tourism exhibition in Malaysia. For the first time, a new form of sports tourism was featured, with two pickleball courts set up to promote this emerging sport‑tourism offering. Kedah, a popular Malaysian destination, made its debut at the fair, with the State Minister attending the opening ceremony and officially unveiling Langkawi’s new brand identity, “Naturally Langkawi.”
A rich array of concurrent activities created a high‑end platform for industry networking and consumer engagement. The Buyer Competition drew extensive participation, offering prizes such as round‑trip tickets to Paris, Japan, Perth, and other destinations, along with cutting‑edge electric bicycles, to consumers who spent a minimum of RM 100. The Ride & Reels short‑video challenge encouraged attendees to explore the fair via public transport, documenting their low‑carbon journeys for a chance to win tech‑related rewards. Meanwhile, those spending RM 300 or more could enter a lucky draw to claim exclusive gifts. The inclusion of the Sarawak Tourism Board added another highlight, announcing that Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, had been selected for Malaysia Airlines’ “Bonus Side Trip” program—the first destination in East Malaysia to receive this honor—allowing international travelers to add Kuching as a complimentary stopover city, further expanding the Borneo tourism landscape.
The professional audience was exceptionally strong, delivering impressive conversion rates. The spring show attracted over 210,000 visitors, while the autumn show set yet another record for attendance. Exhibiting companies widely reported the high quality of the professional visitor base and clear purchasing intent, resulting in notable on‑site sales outcomes. Throughout the fair, numerous peer‑to‑peer networking sessions and media briefings were also held, providing exhibitors with an effective platform for brand exposure and strategic partnerships.
The MATTA Fair is not only a premier venue for brand showcasing and consumer engagement but also a pivotal hub for gaining insights into Southeast Asian tourism trends and exploring pathways for integrating sustainability with sports tourism. As Malaysia approaches its 2026 Year of Tourism, the MATTA Fair, with its robust consumer reach and industry influence, stands as a key engine driving the nation toward its tourism development goals.
