Fair basics
Industry scope
Galleries: The Galleries section is the flagship exhibition area of Art Basel, where visitors can explore works by more than 4,000 artists, including paintings, oil paintings, sculptures, installations, prints, photographs, videos, and digital artworks.
Feature: The Feature section showcases works by established and master-level artists, curated by the participating galleries. These may take the form of solo exhibitions, group shows, or thematic exhibitions that highlight diverse cultures, eras, and artistic approaches.
Statements: The Statements section is dedicated to the latest solo presentations by emerging artists, whose works are also eligible for consideration in the prestigious Baloise Art Prize. The Baloise Group will acquire the winning artist’s work and donate it to leading European art institutions.
Edition: Several top-tier galleries renowned for commissioning limited-edition works will present their collaborative projects with world‑renowned artists in the Edition section, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience significant, hard-to‑find pieces.
Unlimited: Curated by New York‑based art curator Gianni Jetzer, the Unlimited section challenges conventional exhibition formats and constraints, featuring forward‑thinking artworks such as large‑scale sculptures and paintings, film screenings, monumental installations, and live performances.
Parcours: Held at various locations throughout the city of Basel, Parcours presents site‑specific sculptures, artistic interventions, and performances. In 2015, curator Florence Derieux carefully selected works by internationally acclaimed and emerging artists for this program. Parcours is open to the public free of charge, and Samuel Leuenberger will curate this section for the first time in 2016.
Film: The Film section of Art Basel screens films created by artists as well as films about artists. This year, Maxa Zoller assumes the role of curator for the first time; known worldwide for her experimental filmmaking, she will engage with contemporary cinematic media through a diverse and challenging selection of works during the fair.
Magazines: The world’s most influential art publishers will exhibit their art journals—either individually or collectively—in the Magazines section. Editors and publishers from across the field frequently attend the fair and co‑host midday salon discussions featuring prominent figures from the art world.
