The Xi’an Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Industry Exhibition—Xi’an National Defense Technology Expo (hereinafter referred to as the Xi’an Military Expo) is dedicated to advancing the digital transformation of advanced manufacturing. As an integral part of Shaanxi Province’s advanced manufacturing industrial clusters, the aviation cluster is thriving. Yanta District, led by AVIC Xi’an Aircraft Industry Group Co., Ltd., brings together over a thousand enterprises. More than 30 large and medium‑sized military and civilian aircraft models have been developed here, with over 40 local companies participating in the research and development of aircraft such as the Y‑20, J‑20, Z‑20, H‑6K, C919, and the MA60 series. A number of core technologies that fill domestic gaps have achieved breakthroughs in this region, and China’s first regional jet—the MA60 series—equipped with independent intellectual property rights and entering the international market, has taken off from here. The Xi’an aviation cluster was selected as one of the first batch of national advanced manufacturing clusters; meanwhile, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industry is experiencing rapid growth, placing Shaanxi among the nation’s leaders in this field. Beyond aviation, other advanced manufacturing sectors—including commercial vehicles (heavy trucks), passenger vehicles (new energy), and solar photovoltaics—are also leveraging leading enterprises such as Shaanxi Automobile Group, BYD Xi’an, and LONGi Green Energy to achieve swift expansion and steady development, thereby contributing to the robust growth of Shaanxi’s advanced manufacturing industrial clusters.
Shaanxi boasts strong capabilities in the national defense science and technology industry, with distinctive comprehensive advantages. Many of its defense‑related research institutes are “unicorns” at the national level, with technical expertise ranking among the best in China. Numerous key defense enterprises integrate research and production, operating multiple technical process research institutes and product development centers, demonstrating robust R&D capacities within their respective fields and positioning themselves as research‑driven enterprises. Shaanxi’s defense‑related industries benefit from superior technological equipment and favorable research conditions, with strong capabilities in technology integration. Per capita value of technological equipment remains relatively high, featuring a wide array of CNC machining tools and cutting‑edge research and production facilities, some of which are unique even within Asia. In the six major sectors of space, aviation, weaponry, nuclear technology, electronics, and shipbuilding—as well as in emerging high‑tech areas such as microelectronics, optomechatronics, new materials, new energy, automatic control, microwave communications, and computer software—Shaanxi’s defense‑related industries demonstrate strong capabilities in both follow‑on research and independent development, undertaking critical tasks including the overall system and subsystem projects for the development and production of advanced national defense weapons and equipment.
