China-Africa Economic and Trade ExpoProfile

The China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE, abbreviated as the China–Africa Expo), is co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the People’s Government of Hunan Province. It stands as one of the most important platforms for economic and trade cooperation under the China–Africa Cooperation Forum mechanism.Establishing the China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo was the first concrete measure outlined in the “Eight Major Initiatives” of China–Africa cooperation, and it also represents the first national-level, comprehensive, and international mechanism for China–Africa economic and trade collaboration. The Expo is scheduled to be held every two years. During the inaugural edition, the two sides signed a total of 81 cooperative agreements spanning such sectors as agriculture, equipment manufacturing, infrastructure, aviation, and finance.

At present, China–Africa cooperation has reached a new starting point, embracing fresh opportunities and calling for renewed efforts. The China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo will seek to align with the new characteristics, emerging demands, and evolving trends of China–Africa economic and trade cooperation in the new era, introducing innovative arrangements in areas such as the event’s organizational model, conceptual framework, exhibition‑area design, and business‑matching initiatives, with the aim of shaping an Expo that is distinctive, brand‑driven, and highly effective. The Expo comprises two main components: conferences and forums, and an exhibition showcase. The forum program includes the China–Africa Pharmaceutical and Health Industry Cooperation Forum, the China–Africa Infrastructure Cooperation Forum, and numerous economic and trade negotiation sessions. The exhibition component will adopt a hybrid online–offline format, with a total physical exhibition space of 64,000 square meters.(Copyright of this article belongs to Juzhan; unauthorized reproduction is prohibited)

During the China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo, a series of ancillary events will also take place, including the “China–Africa Infrastructure and Financing Cooperation Dialogue,” the “China–Africa Bilateral Trade Promotion Seminar,” the “China–Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation Consultation Meeting,” the “Investment Promotion Conference for African Countries,” and the “Investment Dialogue among Four African Nations (Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, and Mozambique).”On these occasions, political leaders, diplomatic envoys, provincial governors, representatives of international organizations, entrepreneurs, financial institutions, business associations, buyers, exhibitors, academic experts, and media representatives from China and various African countries will gather in Changsha to jointly celebrate this momentous occasion.

The Exhibition Value of the China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo

  • A National-Level Economic and Trade Platform under the FOCAC Framework: As a key supporting event of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation, co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Government of Hunan Province, it is the highest‑level and largest comprehensive expo between China and Africa. Since its inception in Hunan in 2019, the Expo has evolved into a “golden brand” for China–Africa economic and trade cooperation, providing authoritative endorsement for enterprises seeking to engage in China–Africa partnerships.
  • Precision‑Driven, Full‑Chain Connectivity: The Expo aligns closely with Africa’s development priorities—industrialization, agricultural modernization, and green growth—by establishing specialized pavilions for smart mining, clean energy, construction machinery, and modern agricultural equipment. For the first time, a dedicated China–Africa industrial chain cooperation zone has been introduced, facilitating a transition from “single‑commodity trade” to “localized production.” Exhibition content spans emerging sectors such as infrastructure, the digital economy, new‑energy vehicles, and biopharmaceuticals.
  • Global Buyer Attraction: The fourth edition of the Expo drew participants from 53 African countries, 11 international organizations, 27 domestic provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, and over 4,700 Chinese and African enterprises. Among them were 137 Fortune Global 500 companies and 190 China Top 500 firms. Additionally, 764 exhibitors from 43 African nations showcased more than 800 distinctive products.
  • Efficient and Pragmatic Trade Outcomes: With a focus on expanding economic and trade opportunities, the first three editions collectively secured signed projects totaling over US$53.3 billion, with an implementation rate exceeding 83%. At the fourth edition, 176 signed projects worth US$11.39 billion and 293 matchmaking initiatives valued at US$43.156 billion were announced, while on‑site transactions and letters of intent amounted to RMB 2.5 billion.
  • Long‑Term Mechanisms and Innovative Models: A multi‑dimensional cooperation network has been established, integrating the Expo, pilot zones, and enduring institutional frameworks. Innovative approaches such as industry‑production‑trade integration, novel barter trade, and overseas warehousing are being explored. Furthermore, 14 prefecture‑level cities have forged counterpart cooperation mechanisms with 28 African countries, and 17 public overseas warehouses have been deployed across 12 African nations.

Exhibition Review

The Fourth China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo was successfully held in Changsha, Hunan, from June 12 to 15, 2025. Co-hosted by the People’s Government of Hunan Province and the Ministry of Commerce, the expo was themed “China and Africa Take Joint Action, Pursuing Modernization,” attracting participants from 53 African countries, 11 international organizations, 27 domestic provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, as well as over 4,700 Chinese and African enterprises, business associations, and financial institutions. Total registrations exceeded 30,000.

This edition yielded substantial results in terms of signed agreements: 176 projects totaling US$11.39 billion were reviewed and officially announced by the organizing committee, representing a 45.8% increase in project numbers and a 10.6% rise in total value compared with the previous event. Additionally, 293 matchmaking initiatives worth US$43.156 billion were unveiled, up 208% in quantity and 410% in value from the prior expo. Ten African countries, including Namibia, collectively presented 200 project collaboration opportunities.

In terms of on-site transactions, attendance at the main exhibition hall surpassed 200,000, doubling the figure from the previous expo, with projected on‑site and prospective deal values reaching RMB 2.5 billion. The Gaoqiao sub‑venue hosted a total of 45 specialized events and guided tours, drawing more than 17,000 exhibitors and buyers; visitor numbers exceeded 70,000 for the first time, with 44 contracts signed—an increase of 29.4% year over year. Meanwhile, the Construction Machinery Remanufacturing Exhibition held at the Xiangtan Central International Machinery Park attracted over 150 participating companies, facilitated on‑site negotiations among more than 2,400 buyers, and drew over 12,000 visitors, with preliminary order commitments exceeding RMB 200 million.

The proportion of specialized exhibits at this expo was significantly expanded. The main exhibition hall spanned 100,000 square meters, featuring dedicated zones for smart mining technologies and equipment, clean energy, energy conservation and environmental protection, modern agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and other sectors. For the first time, a dedicated area was established for the trade of used vehicles between China and Africa, alongside signature showcases such as the China–Africa Brand Pavilion, the African Good Products Exhibition, and the China–Africa Fashion Industry Exhibition. Twenty-six African countries and twenty-three domestic provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities set up representative booths. Nearly 2,100 Chinese and foreign enterprises participated, including 764 exhibitors from 43 African nations—accounting for over 30% of the total—and approximately 12,000 domestic and international buyers.

The exhibit lineup featured more than a thousand distinctive products, ranging from African food and beverages to handicrafts and jewelry. Chinese-made solutions tailored for African markets—including intelligent mineral‑processing equipment, off-grid solar systems, and modular agricultural irrigation systems—made their debut. An online shopping season for African goods helped bring over 200 premium African food and beverage items into livestreaming platforms and major retail outlets. Throughout the event, more than 30 economic and trade activities were organized, covering topics such as China–Africa industrial chain cooperation, green minerals, infrastructure development, traditional medicine, cultural trade, and youth innovation and entrepreneurship. China Customs signed five protocols granting market access for African food and beverage products to China, while the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission inaugurated its China–Africa Tribunal Center in Changsha. Additionally, 28 significant outcomes were jointly released, including the “China–Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation Blue Book: Report on the Development of China–Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation (2025).”

After six years of development, the China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo has emerged as the highest‑level, largest‑scale comprehensive trade fair between China and Africa, continuously injecting strong momentum into bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
