The Exhibition Value of the Shanghai Book Fair
- China’s most influential urban book fair brand, a “barometer” of national reading and a “testing ground” for industry transformation.Since its inception in 2004, the Shanghai Book Fair has grown over more than two decades into one of China’s largest and most impactful urban book fairs, widely regarded as “a hallmark of Shanghai’s cultural identity.” In 2025, under the theme “I Love Reading, I Love Life,” the fair adopts an innovative “Dual Main Venue + X + N” format, introducing for the first time the Shanghai Exhibition Center and Shanghai Book City as dual main venues. It extends its reach to 16 district sub-venues across the city, 100 physical bookstores, and 46 New-Era Civilization Practice Sites, bringing the spirit of books to every corner of the urban fabric. For publishing houses, participation serves as a strategic gateway to evaluate annual publishing achievements, engage with core reader segments, and stay abreast of industry transformation trends.
- A comprehensive showcase of all book categories, featuring 160,000 high-quality titles.Rooted in the fundamental mission of book exhibition and sales, the fair draws 371 publishing entities from across the country, presenting a total of 160,000 titles. From scholarly masterpieces such as the revised edition of the Twenty-Four Histories—annotated by the China Publishing Group—and thematic publications like “The Collected Works of Mao Zedong” from Hunan Province, to digital publishing innovations from Century Publishing Group and each publisher’s flagship new releases, the fair offers a complete panorama of China’s latest publishing achievements. During the event, 1,267 reading-related activities are held, including signature events such as “first launches,” “first exhibitions,” and “first signings,” making the fair a key platform for unveiling new book titles to readers.
- Bringing together leading industry players to create a hub for publishing exchange and reader engagement. The fair attracts major domestic publishers—including China Publishing Group, Century Publishing Group, Central South Media, and Phoenix Publishing & Media—as well as outstanding publishing institutions from across the nation. The Shanghai International Children’s Book Carnival (Children’s Theme Pavilion) gathers over 80 renowned children’s book publishers, with prominent names such as CITIC Children’s Books, Xiao Bo Ji, Ai Xin Shu, Xinyi Picture Books, and the East China Six Provinces Children’s Publishing Consortium all making their debut. Dozens of children’s book authors also engage directly with young readers. Covering everything from academic publications to popular reads, and ranging from professional symposiums to parent–child reading sessions, the fair builds an efficient bridge between publishers and readers.
- “Reading Plus” cross-sectoral integration, setting the tone for industry innovation.Cognizant of the rising trend toward cultural consumption upgrades, the fair pioneered the “Yuejie Night Market,” seamlessly blending the aroma of books with the lively atmosphere of street-side stalls. For the first time, it issued public‑benefit reading vouchers, amplifying the “ticket‑root economy” effect, and collaborated with surrounding commercial districts to launch the “Book Fair Cultural Flavor Map,” offering discounts on dining, parking, and accommodation upon presentation of a book fair ticket, thus achieving bidirectional flow between cultural and commercial consumption. Digital initiatives were equally vibrant: Century Publishing Group unveiled its new “Shanggu Huidian · Complete Library of Four Treasuries AI+ Edition,” while the FanShu app introduced an interactive “Home Library,” leveraging AI technology to enhance traditional reading experiences.
- Showcasing Yangtze River Delta integration, fostering a regional cultural collaboration platform. This year’s fair debuted the “Yangtze River Delta Brand Physical Bookstore Zone,” where 20 bookstores from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Anhui joined forces, each operating under a unique thematic concept and highlighting its own distinctive offerings. The “Yangtze River Delta Local Records Culture Week” made its first appearance at the Shanghai Book Fair, featuring a dedicated local records culture exhibit. Additionally, a sub-venue was established in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, deeply integrating Shanghai’s metropolitan charm with Wuzhen’s quaint small-town ambiance, advancing the integrated allocation of cultural resources across the Yangtze River Delta.
- “Old Books, New Knowledge” National Invitational Exhibition, promoting the revitalization of ancient texts and cultural heritage. For the first time, the fair brought together the eight pilot provinces designated by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee for the “Old Books, New Knowledge” initiative, gathering antiquarian books from across the country to facilitate industry-wide cooperation and exchanges, and offering them to the general public through centralized sales. Concurrently, the Shanghai Book Fair’s Knowledge Blogger Conference partnered with Yangpu District to boost the supply of high‑quality online content, breathing new life into traditional culture in the digital age.
