The Shanghai Exhibition Center is a professional entity engaged in conference and exhibition business, approved by the People's Government of Shanghai Municipality. The main building of the Shanghai Exhibition Center was completed in March 1955, making it the earliest exhibition venue built in Shanghai after the founding of New China. For over half a century, it has hosted significant political and diplomatic activities, receiving leaders from three generations of the Party as well as dozens of heads of state and government leaders from foreign countries. It regularly shoulders major political tasks such as the Municipal Party Congress, Party Congress, Municipal People's Congress, Municipal CPPCC meetings, receptions for the Army Day, National Day receptions, and New Year's receptions, among others. It also organizes and hosts hundreds of domestic and international exhibitions and commercial promotion events for famous international brands each year. It has become one of the city's main conference centers and famous exhibition venues, serving as an important center for politics, economy, science and technology, culture, and external exchanges in the city, making significant contributions to Shanghai's reform, opening up, and social development.
The Shanghai Exhibition Center stands out in the city's architectural landscape with its distinctive Russian-style architecture that is grand, elegant, and lavishly decorated. It was rated as one of the top ten buildings in Shanghai between 1949-1989 in 1989, one of the top ten gold award classic buildings in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1999, and was recognized as one of the fourth batch of excellent historical buildings in Shanghai in 2005, being recorded in the annals of Shanghai's architectural history. The Shanghai Exhibition Center has been consecutively awarded the title of 'Shanghai Civilized Unit' six times. Covering an area of 93,000 square meters, with a building area of 80,000 square meters, it is located between the bustling Nanjing West Road and the main traffic artery Yan'an Road Middle, enjoying highly favorable geographical conditions. After several expansions and renovations, it underwent comprehensive reinforcement and renovation in 2001 to maintain the original architectural style while enhancing its functions, creating a new pattern of 'exhibitions in the south and conferences in the north'. It now has an exhibition area of 22,000 square meters, with more than 40 multi-functional meeting rooms and halls that can accommodate from dozens to thousands of people respectively. The southern part consists of the Preface Hall, Central Hall, East One Hall, West One Hall, and West Two Hall, forming the exhibition area, while the northern part comprises Friendship Hall and East Two Hall, forming the conference area. These two areas are both independent and interconnected, forming a functional layout where exhibitions and conferences can be held separately or combined.
