Hong Kong International Book FairProfile

The Hong Kong Book Fair is Asia’s largest and most influential book fair. Held annually since 1990, it has become a major summer event in Hong Kong, providing the publishing industry with a platform to promote new titles and offering readers the opportunity to discover fresh publications and meet their favorite authors. (Copyright of this content belongs to Juzhan; redistribution without permission is prohibited.)

This year’s fair adopts “Food Culture · Future Living” as its annual theme, featuring more than 620 cultural events both inside and outside the exhibition halls. These include lectures by renowned authors from around the world, new‑book launch presentations, and a diverse array of multicultural activities, creating a grand literary feast and fostering a culture of reading.

To further position Hong Kong as a hub for Sino‑foreign cultural and artistic exchange, the Hong Kong Book Fair proudly presents the acclaimed “World Cultural and Artistic Gallery,” which aligns with this year’s theme. The “Table & Read” exhibition uses food as a bridge connecting cultures, inviting visitors to savor life and explore the world through the lens of dining. Eight artists have designed eight themed tables, each exploring topics such as food therapy, sustainability, table manners, festive cuisine, fermentation, sensory experiences, music, and art, while collaborating with consulates general from various countries to showcase relevant books and exhibits from across the globe.

For the first time this year, the fair introduces a Cultural and Creative Products Zone, offering interactive experiences highlighting Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage, alongside displays of Macao‑inspired creative products and exquisite imperial‑style文创 items from the Palace Museum. Meanwhile, the Mainland China Pavilion, with Sichuan as its featured province, will draw on the region’s rich history to present the multifaceted facets of Sichuan life through elements such as Sichuan cuisine, Sichuan opera, and Sichuan embroidery. In addition, the fair will host an International Publishing Forum, the Hong Kong Biennial Publishing Awards, and other industry‑wide networking events. An expanded IP Roundtable will also include business‑matching sessions to help participants identify new opportunities.

Each year, the Hong Kong Book Fair collaborates with numerous publishers and professional organizations to select a distinctive theme and organize a series of related activities. Primarily focused on on‑site book sales, the Hong Kong Book Fair serves as a counterpart to mainland China’s book fairs.

Hong Kong International Book Fair tickets are e-tickets. Mainland China visitors must complete online pre-registration with real-name ID verification; overseas visitors must use passport verification; Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan visitors must use their travel permit. On site, verify entry with your ID card or by scanning the e-ticket QR code.

The 2026 Hong Kong International Book Fair is expected to feature 500+ exhibiting companies. To obtain the full exhibitor directory (including booth numbers and contact details), please visit the official exhibition website or contact Jufair.

The Exhibition Value of the Hong Kong Book Fair

  • Hosted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Book Fair has been held continuously for more than thirty editions since its inception in 1990, making it one of the largest and most influential annual events in the global Chinese-language book industry. The fair brings together publishers from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas markets, integrating book sales, copyright trading, and cultural exchange. It is widely recognized within the industry as a leading indicator of trends in Chinese-language publishing and a key gateway for international publishers seeking to enter the Chinese and broader Asian markets.
  • A One‑Stop Showcase Covering the Entire Industry ChainThe fair encompasses the full spectrum of the book industry, including print books—ranging from fiction, literature, children’s titles, comics, educational materials, social sciences, and practical guides—to e‑books, audiobooks, digital reading platforms, cultural and creative products, printing technologies, and copyright transactions. From traditional publishing to digital reading, and from book sales to cross‑border rights licensing, exhibitors can seamlessly connect with potential partners across all stages of the value chain, achieving comprehensive exposure and business opportunities.
  • Precise Access to Global Key Buyers and Industry ResourcesIn 2025, the fair will host over 770 exhibitors from nearly 40 countries and regions, attracting 890,000 visitors. Among them, 55% are primarily interested in purchasing new titles, 49% take advantage of promotional discounts, and 27% seek to experience the cultural ambiance of an international book fair. Average spending per visitor reaches HK$918, accounting for 57% of their annual book expenditures, underscoring the fair’s strong ability to drive consumer engagement. International attendees come from Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, and other destinations, with some Japanese readers traveling specifically to acquire particular publications.
  • Unique Value for Publishing Enterprises: A Core Platform for New‑Book Launches and Market ValidationThe Hong Kong Book Fair serves as a strategic platform for publishers to gauge market response and promote new releases. For instance, “Creation Pavilion” leveraged the popularity of a film to attract numerous Japanese readers eager to purchase its special edition of “The Legend of the City of Kowloon.” Meanwhile, “Abnormal Research Institute,” participating for the first time, exceeded its sales target by 30% within the first three days, while “Jigu Zhai” used the fair to successfully rejuvenate its brand image. Surveys indicate that 55% of visitors prioritize buying new books, clearly demonstrating the fair’s pivotal role as a venue for launching and validating new titles.
  • A Strategic Hub for Mainland China’s “Going Global” Publishing Initiative. More than 40 mainland Chinese publishing houses formed an exhibition delegation, showcasing nearly 20,000 high-quality titles at the 2025 Book Fair. The mainland pavilion, themed around Sichuan Province, featured cultural treasures such as “Encountering Sanxingdui” and the “Shu Road Heritage Series,” which highlight Bashu culture. On-site performances of intangible cultural heritage—including Sichuan Opera face-changing, long-spouted teapot tea ceremonies, and Shu embroidery—drew large crowds. Key national publishing projects like “Xi Jinping: The Governance of China,” “The Library of Rejuvenation,” and “The Confucian Canon” were prominently displayed, effectively advancing the global outreach of Chinese culture.
  • In-Depth Connections Between High-Level Forums and Industry Resources. During the fair, over 620 cultural events were held, ranging from author lectures and new book launches to copyright negotiations and cross-cultural exchanges. Celebrations marking the centenary of Louis Cha’s birth and thematic symposiums on film and literature drew visitors from across the Greater China region and overseas. Prominent writers from various locales engaged directly with readers, helping to position Hong Kong as a pivotal hub for Sino‑foreign cultural and artistic exchange.
  • Hong Kong’s Geographical Location and Industrial Advantages. Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the fair capitalizes on Hong Kong’s unique advantages as an international free-trade port and a cultural crossroads where Eastern and Western influences converge. Over more than three decades, the Hong Kong Book Fair has evolved from a mere sales platform into a landmark venue for cultural exchange within the Chinese-speaking world. Leveraging Hong Kong’s “One Country, Two Systems” framework and the policy support outlined in the National 14th Five-Year Plan—aimed at establishing Hong Kong as a center for Sino‑foreign cultural and artistic interaction—the fair provides exhibitors with a strategic platform to connect with both global and domestic markets.

Exhibition Review

The 35th Hong Kong Book Fair 2025 was successfully held from July 16 to 22 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Hosted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, this year’s fair was themed “Food Culture · Future Living,” serving as a major annual cultural event in Hong Kong and a key highlight of the “Hong Kong Summer Party.” Concurrently, the 8th Sports & Leisure Expo and the 5th Snack World were also staged, bringing together over 770 exhibitors across these three exhibitions. By seamlessly integrating reading, sports, leisure, and culinary experiences, the event created a vibrant summer celebration.

In terms of scale, this edition attracted 770 exhibitors from nearly 40 countries and regions, including a delegation of more than 40 mainland Chinese publishing houses showcasing close to 20,000 high-quality titles. Over 620 cultural events were organized throughout the duration of the fair. Despite a one-day closure on Sunday due to typhoon conditions, the three concurrent exhibitions still drew a total of 890,000 visitors. A research institute commissioned by the organizers conducted a sample survey of over 860 attendees, revealing that the average spending per visitor was HK$918—slightly up from last year—and accounted for 57% of their annual expenditure on printed books. Furthermore, 81% of respondents reported using electronic payment methods.

The Mainland Pavilion and Sichuan as the Featured Province Captivated Visitors. The Mainland Pavilion featured Sichuan as its designated province, spanning approximately 120 square meters and divided into three distinct zones: the Book Zone, the Fusion Zone, and the Activity Zone. The Book Zone showcased premium titles such as “Encountering Sanxingdui,” the “Shu Road Heritage Series,” “An Introduction to Chinese Food Culture,” and “A Compendium of Imperial Tea from the Forbidden City.” The Fusion Zone highlighted creative cultural products based on the giant panda IP, as well as modern designs incorporating traditional Shu embroidery patterns. Meanwhile, the Activity Zone hosted performances including Sichuan Opera face-changing, long-spout teapot tea ceremonies, and demonstrations of Shu embroidery techniques, drawing large crowds eager to experience these captivating displays.

The Mainland Pavilion has specially established a dedicated zone commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, showcasing works such as “Kao Shan,” which combine historical value with literary appeal. Major publishing projects—including “Xi Jinping: The Governance of China,” “The Collection of Revival,” “The Confucian Canon,” and the complete works of the Mao Dun Literature Prize winners—are prominently displayed.

The “When National Treasures Meet National Treasures” national treasure tour—Hong Kong stop—was officially launched at the book fair venue, co-hosted by the China Foreign Cultural Exchange Group, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority, and other organizations. The exhibition features 55 outstanding paintings created by young artists from Hong Kong, Macao, and mainland China, blending pandas with cultural symbols such as the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.

Exhibitors and readers engaged in lively interactions, with several bookstores exceeding their sales expectations. In response to the cinematic success of “City of Ghosts,” the Creation Bookstore introduced a special edition of “The Legend of Si Yat,” attracting approximately thirty to forty Japanese visitors daily; some even traveled specifically to renew their passports just to make the purchase. Meanwhile, “Abnormal Research Institute,” participating in the fair for the first time, saw its sales surpass its budget by 30% within the first three days, while “Jigu Zhai,” making its debut, successfully revitalized its brand image among younger audiences.

Hong Kong’s Sanlian Bookstore, the Hong Kong Chinese Book Company, the Hong Kong Commercial Press, and other imprints under the United Publishing Groupjointly occupied over 200 booths, unveiling nearly a thousand new titles and creative cultural products spanning humanities and social sciences, business and finance, educational materials, practical lifestyle guides, and children’s books.

Consumer Survey of Attendees reveals that 55% of visitors attended primarily to purchase the latest books, 49% sought discounted book prices, and 27% came to experience the cultural atmosphere of the international book fair. The top five most popular book categories are: fiction (45%), children’s and young adult literature (25%), general literature (23%), comics (17%), and supplementary workbooks (16%).

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive John Lee Visits the Book Fair Hong Kong Trade Development Council Chairman Ma Si-hang stated that since its inaugural edition in 1990, the Hong Kong Book Fair, supported by industry professionals and the public, has evolved into a major cultural event in Asia, fulfilling its mission of promoting reading and fostering cultural and artistic exchanges between China and other countries. Deputy CEO of the HKTDC, Cheung Shuk-fun, noted that as the fair celebrates its 35th anniversary, numerous high-profile author talks have been fully booked, with prominent writers from around the world attending in person to engage with readers, thereby helping to position Hong Kong as a hub for Sino‑international cultural and artistic exchange.
