The fair is committed to delivering, with an even more innovative approach, concrete measures, and boundless enthusiasm, a grand gathering that brings together readers from across Shanghai and throughout China.

The SHANGHAI BOOK FAIR plans to bring together approximately 21 national publishing groups and 380 publishing institutions. For the first time, it will welcome two major publishing groups—Guangdong and Heilongjiang—with Heilongjiang serving as the Guest Province. The guest lineup already includes renowned figures such as Mo Yan, Liang Xiaosheng, Chen Yan, Chi Zijian, Sun Ganlu, Xu Zechen, Ma Boyong, Zi Jin Chen, Du Kefeng, Forensic Doctor Qin Ming, Hunzige, Xiao Lin, Bai Cha, Wang Jibing, Yu Zhen, along with other prominent authors and leading representatives of contemporary popular literature.

Under the theme “The Power of Books to Illuminate the Future,” the SHANGHAI BOOK FAIR will highlight publications such as the works of the General Secretary and titles celebrating Shanghai’s achievements. Exhibitors will showcase premium titles, host key reading events, feature a dedicated Yangtze River Delta bookstore zone, and organize initiatives promoting nationwide reading. Notable participants—including China Publishing Group, Heilongjiang as the Guest Province, and Century Publishing Group—will present their signature collections. For the first time, the Municipal Federation of Literary and Art Circles will take an active role, coordinating artistic programs and fostering a shared appreciation for the art of books. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to elevate the aesthetic appeal of the fair by standardizing advertising designs, unifying color schemes, and enhancing visual identity and overall quality.

The SHANGHAI BOOK FAIR has established itself as a premier venue for the annual launch of new book titles, a barometer of reading trends for individual readers, one of the most influential book fairs in the country, and a vital component in strengthening the “Shanghai Culture” brand.

The Exhibition Value of the Shanghai Book Fair

  • China’s most influential urban book fair brand, a “barometer” of national reading and a “testing ground” for industry transformation.Since its inception in 2004, the Shanghai Book Fair has grown over more than two decades into one of China’s largest and most impactful urban book fairs, widely regarded as “a hallmark of Shanghai’s cultural identity.” In 2025, under the theme “I Love Reading, I Love Life,” the fair adopts an innovative “Dual Main Venue + X + N” format, introducing for the first time the Shanghai Exhibition Center and Shanghai Book City as dual main venues. It extends its reach to 16 district sub-venues across the city, 100 physical bookstores, and 46 New-Era Civilization Practice Sites, bringing the spirit of books to every corner of the urban fabric. For publishing houses, participation serves as a strategic gateway to evaluate annual publishing achievements, engage with core reader segments, and stay attuned to industry transformation trends.
  • A comprehensive showcase of all book categories, featuring 160,000 high-quality titles.Rooted in the fundamental mission of book exhibition and sales, the fair draws 371 publishing entities from across China, presenting a total of 160,000 titles. From scholarly masterpieces such as the revised edition of the Twenty-Four Histories—annotated by the China Publishing Group—and thematic publications like “The Collected Works of Mao Zedong” from Hunan Province, to digital publishing innovations from Century Publishing Group and each publisher’s flagship new releases, the event offers a complete panorama of the latest developments in China’s publishing industry. During the fair, 1,267 reading-related activities are held, including signature events such as “first launches,” “first exhibitions,” and “first signings,” making it a key platform for unveiling new book titles to readers.
  • Gathering leading industry resources to create a hub for publishing exchange and reader engagement. The fair attracts major domestic publishers—including China Publishing Group, Century Publishing Group, Central South Media, Phoenix Publishing & Media—as well as outstanding publishing houses from across the country. The Shanghai International Children’s Book Carnival (Children’s Theme Pavilion) brings together over 80 renowned children’s book publishers, with prominent names such as CITIC Children’s Books, Xiao Bo Ji, Ai Xin Shu, Xinyi Picture Books, and the East China Six Provinces Children’s Publishing Consortium making their collective debut. Dozens of children’s book authors also engage directly with young readers. Covering everything from academic publications to popular reads, and ranging from professional symposiums to parent–child reading sessions, the fair builds an efficient bridge between publishers and readers.
  • “Reading Plus” cross-sectoral integration sets the tone for industry innovation.Cognizant of the rising trend toward cultural consumption upgrades, the fair pioneered the “Yuejie Night Market,” seamlessly blending the aroma of books with the lively atmosphere of street-side stalls. For the first time, it distributed public‑benefit reading vouchers, amplifying the “ticket‑root economy” effect, and collaborated with surrounding commercial districts to launch the “Book Fair Cultural Flavor Map,” offering discounts on dining, parking, and accommodation upon presentation of a book fair ticket, thus achieving bidirectional flow between cultural and commercial consumption. Digital initiatives were equally vibrant: Century Publishing Group unveiled its new “Shanggu Hui Dian – Complete Library of Four Treasuries AI+ Edition,” while the FanShu app introduced an interactive “Home Library,” leveraging AI technology to enhance traditional reading practices.
  • Showcasing Yangtze River Delta integration, fostering a regional cultural collaboration platform. This year’s fair debuted the “Yangtze River Delta Brand Physical Bookstore Zone,” where 20 bookstores from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Anhui joined forces, each operating under a distinct thematic focus and highlighting unique selling points. The “Yangtze River Delta Local Records Culture Week” made its inaugural appearance at the Shanghai Book Fair, featuring a dedicated local records culture exhibit. Additionally, a sub-venue was set up in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, deeply integrating Shanghai’s metropolitan charm with Wuzhen’s quaint small-town ambiance, advancing the integrated allocation of cultural resources across the Yangtze River Delta region.
  • “Old Books, New Knowledge” National Invitational Exhibition promotes the revitalization of ancient texts and cultural heritage. For the first time, the fair brought together the eight pilot provinces designated by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee for the “Old Books, New Knowledge” initiative, gathering antiquarian books from across the country to facilitate industry-wide cooperation and exchanges, and offering them to the general public through centralized sales. Concurrently, the Shanghai Book Fair’s Knowledge Blogger Conference partnered with Yangpu District to boost the supply of high‑quality online content, breathing new life into traditional culture in the digital age.

Review

From August 13 to 19, 2025, the 21st Shanghai Book Fair and “Book-Scented China” Shanghai Week were successfully held. With the theme “I Love Reading, I Love Life,” this year’s fair innovatively adopted a dual‑venue model—featuring both the Shanghai Exhibition Center and Shanghai Book City—as its main venues. The event extended across 16 district sub‑venues, 100 physical bookstores, and 46 New Era Civilization Practice sites, spanning a total exhibition area of 42,000 square meters. Operating for an unprecedented 12 hours per day over seven days, it delivered a high‑density program of book sales and reading‑related activities.

Record‑breaking scale and attendance. The fair welcomed over 382,000 visitors, up 28.4% year over year; total book sales reached RMB 64.727 million, a 31.6% increase; cultural and creative product revenues totaled RMB 10.17 million, up 100.1%; and 1,267 reading events were hosted citywide, a 23.8% rise. Visitors from other provinces and municipalities accounted for 25%, highlighting the significant spillover effects of integrated cultural, tourism, commercial, and exhibition initiatives.

A showcase of premium titles, with numerous premieres and highlights. The fair attracted 371 publishing houses nationwide, presenting 160,000 book titles. The Chinese Publishing Group’s newly revised edition of the Twenty-Four Histories, specifically the “Southern History,” drew enthusiastic crowds at its launch signing event, while the deputy editor-in-chief of Zhonghua Book Company and a professor from Capital Normal University shared their insights on reading on site. Hunan Province, as the guest province, unveiled heavyweight new releases such as “Mao Zedong’s Writings” and “Why Hanfu: Rediscovering the Costumes of the Mawangdui Han Tombs.” Additionally, the “War Crimes Documentation Database” and the documentary “Judgment of Justice” were launched, and the event “Xiang–Shanghai Collaboration: Inheriting Cultural Heritage—Promotion of High-Quality Publications by Central South Media and Partner Signing Ceremony” further advanced the deep integration of publishing resources.

A vibrant children’s book carnival, with parent–child reading taking center stage. The Shanghai International Children’s Book Carnival (Children’s Theme Pavilion) brought together more than 80 renowned national children’s publishers and over 10,000 high-quality domestic and international titles. Dozens of acclaimed children’s authors—including Shen Shixi, Qin Wenjun, Yang Hongying, Balu, and Wang Yimei—engaged in close‑up interactions with young readers. The East China Six Provinces Children’s Publishing Consortium, the China Children’s Book Alliance, CITIC Children’s Books, Aixinshu, and Xinyi Picture Books all showcased their offerings through specially designed thematic zones.

The inaugural “Yuejie Night Market” sparked widespread excitement, with notable economic impacts. Every evening at 5:30 , the “Yuejie Night Market” opened promptly on the outdoor plaza of the Shanghai Exhibition Center, drawing large numbers of residents and tourists with handmade cultural products, light refreshments, and nostalgic childhood games. For the first time, public‑benefit reading vouchers were distributed, achieving an almost 100% redemption rate. A “Cultural Flavor Map of the Book Fair” linked nearby cultural landmarks, sports and leisure venues, and traditional eateries. According to big‑data monitoring, the dual‑venue program directly stimulated approximately RMB 181 million in spending across catering, retail, accommodation, transportation, and other services.

Elements of Yangtze River Delta integration shone brightly, with brand‑driven initiatives continuously upgraded. For the first time, a dedicated “Yangtze River Delta Brand Physical Bookstore Zone” was established, bringing together 20 bookstores from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Anhui. The “Yangtze River Delta Local Records Culture Week” made its debut at the Shanghai Book Fair. A sub‑venue was also set up in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, achieving a profound fusion of Shanghai’s urban grandeur and Wuzhen’s quaint charm. The “Old Books, New Knowledge” National Invitational Exhibition featured the full lineup of eight pilot provinces designated by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, while the Shanghai Book Fair’s Knowledge Blogger Conference promoted the supply of high‑quality online content.

Digital reading scenarios reinvented, with AI technologies empowering traditional culture. Century Publishing Group’s Digital Publishing Pavilion unveiled the “Shanggu Huidian·Wenyuan Pavilion Siku Quanshu AI+ Edition,” effectively lowering barriers to accessing ancient texts. The FanShu app zone transformed into an immersive, touch‑enabled “home library,” where readers can scan QR codes to listen to audiobooks at any time. Meanwhile, Yuwen celebrated its tenth anniversary with a series of engaging IP‑themed exhibitions, including “Let Good Stories Live On” and the seven‑day “Homage to Masters” lecture series.

Citywide collaboration blossomed, with the spirit of reading deeply embedded in the community. The “New Discoveries Science Booklist” graced a Huangpu River cruise ship; the nation’s first science‑comic themed around go‑karts debuted in Jiading District; Xujiahui Library partnered with the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema to host the “Night of Seeking Light” carnival; the “Celebrity Island Tour” ventured to Chongming; Hu Guang Village in Songjiang initiated a “Family Tradition Reading Sharing Session”; and Fengxian organized the “I Am a Reading Advocate: Family Parent–Child Reading Competition.”
