Review

The 18th International Solar Photovoltaic and Smart Energy (Shanghai) Conference & Exhibition was successfully held from June 10 to 13, 2025, at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai). With a massive scale of nearly 400,000 square meters, the event brought together over 3,500 industry‑chain enterprises from more than 90 countries, featuring an international exhibitor share of 30%. Attendance exceeded 500,000, further cementing its position as the world’s leading trade show for the photovoltaic sector.

Technological Innovation Flourishes; High‑Efficiency Products Set the Trend

Amid profound industry restructuring, companies have maintained a robust pace of technological innovation. N‑type TOPCon modules have emerged as the clear mainstream, with JinkoSolar unveiling its Tiger Neo 3.0 module, delivering 670 W of power and 24.8% efficiency. Leading manufacturers such as JA Solar, LONGi Green Energy, and Trina Solar have showcased high‑efficiency products exceeding 750 W in power and surpassing 23% efficiency. Bifacial technologies have also made significant strides, as LONGi introduced HIBC‑based modules exceeding 700 W, achieving mass‑production efficiencies approaching 26%, while announcing that its silicon–perovskite tandem cell has reached a conversion efficiency of 33%, setting a new global record. AE Solar exhibited all‑scenario ABC modules, each boasting efficiencies above 25%. Meanwhile, perovskite technology has achieved substantial progress, with Jidian Guangneng presenting gigawatt‑scale production‑line modules, and numerous companies displaying perovskite–crystalline silicon tandem cells.

Deep Evolution of PV‑Storage Integration; Cross‑Sector Players Make Strong Entrances

Energy storage emerged as the exhibition’s central highlight, so much so that it was jokingly referred to as “more of a storage expo.” Major players—including Huawei, Sungrow, CATL, BYD, EVE Energy, Ruipu Lanjun, and Haichen Energy—fielded formidable displays of battery cells and integrated storage solutions, with grid‑forming energy storage systems and PV‑storage integration solutions taking center stage. Home appliance giants such as Midea, Haier, Gree, and Skyworth participated on a large scale for the first time, positioning new energy as a key growth driver. The deep convergence of AI and PV‑storage was evident, with AI‑powered photovoltaic plant operation platforms, virtual power plant dispatch systems, and blockchain‑based green electricity trading platforms drawing significant attention on site.

Rich Outcomes from International Cooperation; Industry Unites to Overcome Challenges

At the opening ceremony, the Government of Sarawak, Malaysia, signed a memorandum of understanding with Shanghai Electric and China Three Gorges International for a 1,000 MW floating solar project. Additionally, 20 organizations—including Xinxin Group, Ant Digital Technology, JA Solar, and JinkoSolar—jointly launched the Global Green Carbon Chain Alliance initiative. Despite unprecedented security upgrades at the venue and isolated labor‑related disputes, which resulted in a year‑on‑year reduction of approximately 600 exhibitors, the industry’s resolve to build consensus remained undiminished. Concurrent with the exhibition, more than 20 parallel forums were held, including the Global Conference on Cutting‑Edge Photovoltaic Technologies and the Global Conference on Frontiers of PV‑Storage Integration, fostering communication and collaboration across the value chain to collectively address challenges such as overcapacity and price wars.
